APS6 Data Engineer - Multiple Locations

The program allows participants to develop their workplace technical and corporate skills in a supportive team environment. The Opening Doors Neurodiverse Program is a 12-month temporary employment

opportunity. The program has a unique structure providing participants with a

Career Development Manager to guide and support capability development and a

business manager supporting development of on-the-job technical knowledge

and skills. Participants will be actively supported and encouraged to apply for a

permanent position in future recruitment processes.

Location of roles:


The job roles are located in various locations, Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne CBD, Newcastle or Penrith. Applicants should live within a commutable distance to any of these locations. Job Description


The APS6 Data Engineer undertakes technical and administrative activities to

design, build, test and maintain data and analytics. They use a range of techniques which integrate structured and unstructured data for use in analytics applications, develop technical solutions to improve access to data and optimise data usage, and connect systems to data and analytics outputs.


The APS6 Data Engineer writes responsible, optimised, tested and quality

assured code to deliver business outcomes.


As an APS 6 Data Engineer, you will:

  • Engage with business partners to exchange information, influence decisions and help resolve technical issues

  • Analyse, design, test and maintain complex data centric IT systems including configuration, administration, problem diagnosis and resolution

  • Leverage advanced analytical and statistical techniques to combine large complex data from multiple sources


Work Level Standard


An APS6 works under limited direction and is accountable for undertaking

work that is complex in nature and delivering quality results in accordance

with the requirements of their work area and team plans, with the opportunity

to act with reasonable autonomy. They may exercise judgment to provide

detailed technical, professional, and/or policy advice in relation to complex

problems and may assist in strategic planning, program and project

management and policy development.


The APS6 will have an extensive understanding of the requirements of the

position, including as well as the legislative, regulatory and compliance

frameworks that underpin its activities. They will have a considerable level of

stakeholder contact in relation to difficult or sensitive issues and will liaise with

a range of stakeholders in a representational role.


The APS6 may be a team coach or lead a small operational team and is

expected to be capable of reviewing the quality of work undertaken by others

within a work group. They are accountable for organising their own workflow,

and for making decisions in relation to their work area.


Duty Statement


  1. Develop data and analytics solutions and resolve highly complex and/or significant technical issues in order to ensure business outcomes are met

  2. Develop, design and implement data and analytics solutions that are flexible and sustainable, make optimal use of technologies and ensure achievement of outcomes and objectives

  3. Manage end-to-end design activities that deliver self-service data and analytics solutions ensuring a user centred approach

  4. Develop and maintain relationships with stakeholders to influence and achieve balanced outcomes, and to support automated deployment of solutions

  5. Undertake research and analysis with regard to the design, development, implementation and evaluation of technical data and analytics products and ensure delivery of quality solutions


Applicant eligibility requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older

  • Must have a diagnosis of autism (includes Autism Spectrum Disorder; Asperger’s Syndrome; Autistic Disorder or PDD-NOS) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (includes ADD)

  • Must have proof of Australian Citizenship and agree to the Federal Government’s background checks

  • All candidates must be able to undergo a police check, and some will require a government clearance.

  • Must be able to participate in the Specialisterne Workshop and Assessment Centre process


What you should have

  • Programming languages: Java, Scala

  • Experience using processing frameworks such as Kafka, Nifi and Spark

  • Experience in web / application development and database technologies including Javascript, Jquery, .Net, SQL server and Teradata

  • Graph platform knowledge in one or more of the following aspects: graph ingestion, graph querying and network analytics

  • Experience or knowledge in applying DevOps and DataOps principles

  • Knowledge in cloud environments, AWS preferable


What is nice to have

  • Qualifications in a related discipline such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems

  • Knowledge of cloud based microservices platform for analytics deployment and model development applying domain expertise using AWS or Azure components
